What is GS1 Extended Identification Data?

GS1 Extended Identification Data is a collective term for all Application Identifier (AI) key-value pairs that are appended after the primary identification keys (such as GTIN/AI 01, SSCC/AI 00, GLN/AI 414, etc.) within the GS1 coding and digital link system. It belongs to the variable extended identification segment in the GS1 standard. Without altering the underlying primary key, it supplements the identification with business semantics, refines the identity granularity, and attaches dynamic attributes. It is the core extension mechanism that upgrades GS1 identification from a “single identity code” to a “full information carrier”.

It includes two types of GS1 AI data:

  • Key Qualifiers (used to refine the unique identity of an entity): Product Variant (22), Batch/Lot Number (10), Serial Number (21), Document Number (8020), etc.
  • GS1 Data Attributes (used to describe the dynamic characteristics of a product): Expiration Date (17), Net Weight (3100), Production Date (11), etc.

How to Add Extended Identification Data?

1.Go to the Digital Link Management dashboard, click the three-dot button on the right side, and select “Extended Identification Data” from the pop-up menu.

2.Click the “Add Extended Identification Data” button, and enter the Key Qualifier and GS1 Data Attribute in the pop-up window.

Practical Example (Based on the Current Soda Product)

  • Primary Key Only (Basic Identification): https://id.gtin.xin/01/07098765432108 – This only identifies the “500ml Soda” product category, corresponding to a general product page.
  • With Extended Identification Data (Composite Identification): https://id.gtin.xin/01/07098765432108/22/ZERO500/10/240801/17/250801 – Where:
    • /22/ZERO500 and /10/240801 are Key Qualifiers, refining the identification granularity from “a type of soda” to “the sugar-free soda from batch 240801”.
    • /17/250801 is a Data Attribute, supplementing the expiration date information for that batch.
